Sarah Waters on the echoes of 'sensation novels' in Fingersmith.
"Often, when I'm asked about the writing of Fingersmith, I say that I used the book as a way of mopping up the various juicy 19th-century titbits I hadn't been able to fit into my first two novels; and I'm only half joking. Working on Tipping the Velvet had given me a sense of the sort of lush, lesbian stories it might be possible to tease out of the Victorian setting, and Affinity, with its prison cells and séances, had only drawn me further into the darker, queerer institutions of 19th-century life. By the time I'd finished writing that book, I was hooked on the "sensation novels" of writers such as Wilkie Collins, Sheridan LeFanu and Mary Elizabeth Braddon: novels whose pre-occupation with sex, crime and family scandals had once made them runaway bestsellers. Tentatively, I began to piece together a ..."

Our hearts are a-twitter because the latest Sarah Waters adaptation, Fingersmith, is finally about to hit the small screens for a three-part dose of low lives and high drama.

Fingersmith is Waters' third novel and was nominated for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize in 2002. Outspoken Megan Fox has a dirty secret — she’s a huge nerd!
It turns out that the Angelina Jolie look-alike who said, “Sex is something that everyone does, so why can’t I talk about it?” would rather watch a zombie movie than pose in a bikini, says her How to Lose Friends & Alienate People co-star Simon Pegg.
“Megan’s a bit of a geek, and she was a fan of Shaun of the Dead,” Shaun actor Simon, 38, told OK! at the Oct. 1 launch of the movie’s companion book.
In the movie Simon and Megan, 22, play a journalist and a starlet, both trying to make it to the top in New York -- while Simon's character tries to make it with her.
But offscreen their relationship was less X-rated and more X-Men.
“We talked about comic books,” admits Simon.
How to Lose Friends opened in movie theaters on Oct. 3.

Comic Writers Speak: Bring Back The Bondage For Wonder Woman |
Oct 11, 2008 |
SexiVixxEN |

If Warner Bros.’ new directive is that the studio’s adaptations of DC characters be even darker, where does that leave Wonder Woman? From the sound of things, the film’s producer isn’t too keen on playing up the powerful sexual metaphors that the superhero represents. But that’s exactly what the filmmakers should play up, argue comic book writers, if they want to make a Wonder Woman who’s not just darker, but also more true to the spirit of the original and yet the most modern version we’ve ever seen.
“Wasn’t the guy who created her a protofeminist?” asked former “Catwoman” writer Ed Brubaker. “He had multiple wives-slash-lovers, and was a crazy character for his time.”
William Moulton Marston actually based Wonder Woman on his wife Elizabeth, who he considered to be pretty liberated — after all, she and he shared a live-in female lover in a polyamarous arrangement. Back in the 1940s, this was radical, and the couple’s ideas about women, love, and sex seeped into his construction of Princess Diana. “There was an awful lot of bondage,” “Sandman” creator Neil Gaiman said. “She’s got a magic lasso that makes people do whatever she wants. You could certainly up that, and make something dark out of that — or at least dead kinky.”
Of course, the comic books and adaptations kept that aspect just bubbling underneath the surface.
“Wonder Woman is really complicated to do right,” said “Kingdom Come” writer Mark Waid. “The idea of sexuality being a force that permeates it — through the bondage, the surrender, the weird S&M scenes — has been disguised pretty nicely. Not everyone was hip to the subtext. The trick is to do it and not be overt in any way so that the people who do the marketing tie-ins — the family meals, the Underoos — don’t freak out. How do you find a way to fold that sense of sexuality into it and still make it wholesome for the whole family?”
Lynda Carter’s TV version is one way — but Waid isn’t sure that “pure and chaste and wholesome” take is the way to go. “Not that she needs to be an overtly sexual creature,” he said, “but you can’t help but look at the failed Wonder Womans, and wonder what’s the missing piece?”
Waid suggests that Wonder Woman’s mission become less American, more global. “Batman can’t wipe out all the crime in Gotham, but he’s trying to minimize the suffering,” he said. “Superman is trying to spread hope on a case-by-case basis. But if Wonder Woman wants to change the world — and good luck with that — call me from Iraq. Without violating the precepts of fantasy, where we don’t want to ask the hard questions, why not have her in the Third World, or a place where it’s not safe for women to be in, in the Middle East? That reboot would be really interesting if they had the guts to take an American icon and make her an international woman. Go wide with it.”
Or, as Joss Whedon was attempting to do , go wide, but also stay small — deal with the domestic drama that she’d be facing by trying to balance work (being a missionary) with home (cue empty-nest mom).
“I’ve love to read the Joss Whedon ‘Wonder Woman’ script,” Gaiman said. “I’d be fascinated to see what he did with it. But if there’s one thing Alan Moore taught us 23 years ago, it’s that there aren’t any bad characters, only writers who don’t explore what makes a character interesting. What’s interesting about Wonder Woman? Whether it’s the idea that she is an Amazon who grew up for the first 20 years of her life without ever encountering male entities in a sort of mythological context, or whether it’s the idea as a woman as the second or third strongest being on the face of the planet, or whether you just love the idea of her jetting around in an invisible plane. Then you make that cool, and you make it powerful. For William Moulton Marston, it was a bit of all that…plus the bondage.”
How do you think Wonder Woman should be portrayed in the comics? Do you agree with what any of the above creators have to say about the character? Sound off in the comments.

Could A ‘Superman’ Sequel Depend On Christopher Nolan And ‘Batman 3?’ |
Oct 11, 2008 |

The internet has been swamped with reasons and rumors as to why Superman-fans are still waiting to hear something — anything – official about a possible sequel or franchise revamp for Big Blue. From the news about Warner Bros. wanting to take a “darker” route with the character moving forward, to the whispers about the studio hunting for a new director, there’s no shortage of “he-said-she-said” regarding the delay on a follow-up to 2004’s “Superman Returns.”
However, LatinoReview throws yet another rumor into the mix as to why there’s been seemingly no movement on the “Superman” film front — and it has to do with “The Dark Knight” writer/director, Christopher Nolan. During a chat with the president of DC Comics, Paul Levitz, LatinoReview quotes DC’s head honcho as saying that Warner Bros. is waiting on Nolan to sign on to direct and write the highly-anticipated “Batman 3,” elaborating, “once that happens, the release date for ‘Superman’ and all other future projects will follow.”
Granted, readers should take this news with the standard grain of salt, considering the exchange took place at a party after the recent “Watchmen” press screening in New York, and was written under the guise of a casual conversation with Levitz (as well as factoring in “Dark Knight” co-writer David Goyer’s recent comments), but with each passing news story regarding DC Comics’ stable of characters heading to the silver screen, it’s become abundantly clear that — regardless of whether or not ‘Superman’ hinges on him — Nolan has become a vital cog in Warner Bros. movie machine.
The article also states that Warner Bros. hopes to have the third installment of the revamped Batman franchise in theaters by 2011, with a new Superman film hitting a year later.
If the article is to be believed, should Warner Bros. put that much stock in Nolan? And would you rather see a sequel or a total revamp of “Superman”? Comment below, Splash Page readers.

People has made another issue devoted to the teen dreams of the Disney channel, this time focusing on the record-breaking High School Musical 3 crew. The kids all talked about how they've really become "family" blah blah blah.
Ashley Tisdale, however, reminded us again why exactly she is "The Tiz." The girl came in to audition and apparently didn't like the looks of Lucas Grabeel, the guy who would eventually play her twin.
"We would hardly talk to each other," Ashley said. "When I was auditioning for Sharpay, I screen-tested with him and I was acting like Sharpay. I think he was like, 'Who is this girl telling me what to do?'"
Vanessa Hudgens hints that she would like to keep doing more movies with beau Zac Efron.
"No one says it's the last time," Vanessa said. "Who knows what the future will bring?"
I'm about to bet it isn't the last time. I bet Vanessa will do her very best to get cast opposite Zac again -- and if she doesn't she's going to be on set everyday making sure that she's the only who gets to put her paws on the pretty boy. |

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Star Taylor Kitsch Talks Gambit And Hugh Jackman |

After weeks of internet silence, it appears that 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is slowly popping out its claws and tearing up the web with breaking news. Yesterday, we got details from “Wolverine” producer Lauren Shuler Donner on the film’s storyline and overall feel (in addition to voicing her vote for a “Deadpool” film), and now today, over on Media Blvd., we hear from Taylor Kitsch, star of NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” who will be making the jump to the silver screen as Gambit in “Wolverine.”
While the interview is scant on details about the film, Kitsch was happy to talk about the role as the mysterious Gambit, saying in the article, “I love that character, I love the powers, and I love what they did with him. I didn’t know that much [about Gambit], but in my experience, it was a blessing to go in and create my take on him. I’m excited for it, to say the least.”
In addition to his comparisons of Gambit to Tim Riggins — his character from “Friday Night Lights — (”Both have a lack of parenthood in their lives.”), Kitsch was also very eager to heap praise on his “Wolverine” co-star, Hugh Jackman (who reprises his role as the resident bad-ass of the X-Men, Wolverine), saying that he was a “huge influence” on the young actor’s life and that “[Jackman]’s incredibly disciplined and free. He’s just this person that’s so grounded and so open that you question whether it’s real or not. I’ve met nobody like him.”
Excited to see Gambit throw his playing cards in “Wolverine?” Think Kitsch can pull off the role? Let us know in the comments.

International Trailer for Sean Ellis’s “The Broken” |
Oct 11, 2008 |

Best known for the visually impressive (but overlong) Cashback, British director Sean Ellis is now trying his hand at horror with The Broken. The cast includes Lena Heady (300, The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and the always great Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under, The Visitor). Don’t ask me to decipher this plot though:
On a busy street in London, Gina thinks she sees herself drive past in her own car. Stunned by this strange event, Gina follows the mystery woman up to her apartment. From here, events take an eerie turn for the worse until Gina’s awareness slides from solid reality into a world that will haunt more than just her nightmares.
Judging from the below trailer, the film seems to be as highly stylized as Cashback, and it’s definitely aiming for an atmospheric horror experience. Ellis’s first short, Left Turn, was also a moody horror film, so at least we know he’s not completely new to the genre. Hopefully we’ll get a better sense of what this film is actually about in future trailers.
I also hope that Ellis has since learned to trim some fat from his films after Cashback. It was clear to me within the first thirty minutes of that film that it had some serious pacing problems due to lax editing. Perhaps that’s just part of the danger with adapting a short film, but the film still exhibited some dangerous excess which could potentially be detrimental to a budding young director. |

The 'Phone Booth' actor developed a taste for alcohol in his early teens and admits he needed to quit before he got seriously ill.

"For me there was no choice. It was tough but I was dying. I was struggling not to have a complete meltdown. I was just gone. I'm glad I'm out of that cycle, I'm very lucky."
The 32-year-old star also insists he was serious when he propositioned 73-year-old actress Dame Eileen Atkins for sex three years ago - and has vowed to try and seduce her again.
He added: "The one that got away! I gave it all that I was worth. She's an incredibly attractive woman, wicked. I fell at the first hurdle, my ego couldn't take any more refusals. I saw her in New York and said our time will come. It's unfinished business!"

Tim Robbins is known in Hollywood as an Academy Award-winning actor, director, activist and hockey fanatic. On Friday, he added comedian to his repertoire while getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
"I used to take the bus from here to Burbank to go to work," he recalled. "When the bus was late, I would walk up and down and throw my cigarettes down. Now I have the honor of having this done to my star."
Guests at the ceremony included Robbins' longtime partner, Susan Sarandon, as well as relatively diminutive actor Jack Black, who said he has known the tall, lanky Robbins for 25 years.
"I literally looked up to him," Black joked. "I actually became his stalker because I wanted to be part of his world."
Robbins was nominated for a best-director Oscar in 1996 for "Dead Man Walking," a movie he co-wrote about the death penalty. Sarandon's role in it won the Oscar for best actress.
"I am so pleased to be a part of his life, and I want to present Tim's best production our three kids," Sarandon said.
Born in West Covina, Calif., and raised in New York City, Robbins came from a family of entertainers. His father, Gil Robbins, played with the folk group The Highwaymen in the 1960s.
Robbins, 49, is known for his proclivity for bold roles. He has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as "Mystic River," "The Shawshank Redemption" "Jacob's Ladder" and "The Player"

"The Incredible Hulk" DVD is set to hit stores on October 21st, but FilmSchoolRejects were able to get the film early and went straight for the bonus material, which was rumored to contain a shot of Captain America.
Back in June, before the film hit theaters, director Louis Leterrier revealed that Captain America shows up in the film. "There's a point when Bruce Banner gives up on his quest for the cure and decides to kill himself," said Leterrier. "So he travels far North and reaches the Arctic Circle. The result was a very dark and strong scene, which Marvel, me and everyone else considered to be too hard for young audiences to take, so we've cut it. Having that said, when Bruce arrives at his destination he meets up with Captain America!"
He added: "The material will definitely be on the DVD."
In the alternate opening on the DVD, a scene shows Bruce Banner wandering around. Near the end, as an avalanche crashes down toward the camera, observant fans can spot Captain America frozen in the snow. His shield is clearly visible as it lays on top of him.

Who does Matt think should play CAPTAIN AMERICA? |

We believe Nick Cassavetes, the director of THE NOTEBOOK and ALPHA DOG is the guy Marvel want to direct this picture after they flirted with offering the project to Jon Favreau but of course he is already busy with prepping IRON MAN 2 and will likely be the director of choice for THE AVENGERS, a movie due out just six weeks after this picture in the Summer of 2010.
Cassavetes is a solid dramatic helmer, great visuals, pacing and is estute at character development. He’s more of the Gavin Hood ilk, the guy they got to direct X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.
Much of the success of THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (titled so it can tie in with THE AVENGERS movie) will come down to his casting. We believe they will be looking for an actor in their early 30’s, a guy who has an “All American Look” who would work in both a 1940’s WWII setting as a super soldier but also wouldn’t look too much out of place in the modern day world.
He needs to carry the sense of nobality and true value. He is SUPERMAN but if he had worked hard from a working class background for the ability and stature of his powers to become a symbol of America.
Physically, he should have blonde hair and blue eyes. He MUST have a square jaw, he is the alpha male.
My first choice for the role would have been Daniel Craig. He has all the above qualities and then some and even though he’s English, he is a good enough actor to put on a great American accent. Sadly, and yes I know Christian Bale seems to be quite ok doing it with TERMINATOR and BATMAN… it’s really hard to see him being both CAPTAIN AMERICA and James Bond… two icons from two different nations.
Also, it would be difficult for an actor to be in two demanding franchises which will always be looking at quick turn around sequels.
Shame though, because Craig would have been the man. The pain behind those eyes, as if he has witnessed so many deaths and destruction in the second world war, the leadership, you could imagine men would jump into battle besides him, even though they knew it would mean certain death.
Matthew McConaughey certainly carries the look and I’ve said this before, he is the right age and if he could only act and carry a leadership quality, he would have won the role by now.
Ryan Gosling… this week rumored for THE GREEN LANTERN could be worth a shout. He also has a history with Cassavetes, after working with him on THE NOTEBOOK.
Brad Pitt can certainly carry the “All American Male” but he sucked as the leader of men in TROY and it would be extremely difficult to tie him down to a multi film comic book franchise. A massive stature of a name which would guarantee box office return but I can’t see it.
Ryan Reynolds who was desperate to play THE FLASH, seems to have settled instead on DEADPOOL over at Marvel. They wouldn’t cast him twice.
Scotsman Gerard Butler certainly has the stature and chin but there’s something about him that would put me off casting him here and I can’t quite put my finger on what that is.
My choice, after seeing the true value of Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT and how he was the true hearrt of that epic movie would be Aaron Eckhart.
He has the square jaw, the blue eyes, the leadership quality, the stature, the age requirement, the physicality, the look of a All American WW-II solider and the undoubted acting chops!
And who cares if he has played Dent, I think it could work. Sure, I’ve said many a time you shouldn’t cast two actors in two different comic book roles (like they did with James Marsden in X-MEN and SUPERMAN) but when a casting choice is this perfect, how could you not?

Filming got underway in London this week on Guy Ritchie's latest film project, Sherlock Holmes, as Robert Downey Jr donned a bowler hat and smoking jacket to portray the world-famous sleuth.
Looking as though he had stepped back in time - takeaway coffee cup aside - talented actor Robert seemed focused on the job as he joined director Guy at historic St Paul's Cathedral for the film's first day of shooting.
Due for release next year, the movie also stars British actor Jude Law as the detective's sidekick, Dr Watson, as well Rachel McAdams in the female lead and Mark Strong, from Guy Richie’s in RocknRolla, as the villain.
One thing the Iron Man star won't need to worry about during the shoot is his British accent, which he mastered while preparing for his Oscar-nominated portrayal of iconic comedian Charlie Chaplin.
"At the cast read-through, Robert's British accent was so good as Holmes I remember thinking: 'He's got a Brit inside him, that man,'" revealed his English co-star Kelly Reilly

23-year-old Kim Ji-Who Has had reportedly suffered from depression due to a backlash over his recent admission that he was homosexual.

Review: Quarantine |
Oct 11, 2008 |
SexiVixxEN |

As far as Hollywood's reliably tepid horror output is concerned, Quarantine works as every bit the disposable jolt dispenser it's assembled to be. It's got a nifty enough concept in its favor and a mildly recognizable cast that needs not fear any characterization coming between them and certain death by the time the credits roll, and it's hard to believe that there's not at least one sequence in here that might get even the most cynical horror fan's heart rate to rise a beat or two -- and I say this as a documented fan of the (still superior) source material.
Young news reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are covering a Los Angeles fire station during their nightly routines when the two tag along on an emergency call to an apartment building. Not terribly long after their arrival, all hell breaks loose and the building's occupants -- Angela included -- find themselves contained within against their will and left to fend off a dangerous virus that causes the infected to become a rabid zombie variant, one aggressively determined to spread the love around.
Sony reportedly got Quarantine underway from the shooting script and remake rights of [REC] before that film had even completed principal photography, so within a year of the original's Spanish release, we find ourselves greeted with an unsurprisingly faithful remake, down to every major narrative beat and scare tactic, not to mention the very layout of the multi-storied building itself. Director John Erick Dowdle effectively mimics that film's sense of geography -- even if his work on the script (with brother Drew) amounts to only the slightest tweaks here and there: trading one character's non-chalant racism for another's non-chalant sexism, swapping the ethnicity of a minority family, making the vague climax a wee bit more obtuse. This isn't the shot-for-shot trade-in that Funny Games was for the better (or Psycho was, for worse), but it is identical enough that all those moviegoers who would otherwise be frightened off first and foremost by the threat of subtitles can safely trust that they've virtually seen [REC] as well...
...which is a mild shame, because that Angela (Manuela Valesco) never gets as distractingly hysterical as this Angela, and because a climactic shot down a staircase in the remake isn't nearly as chilling or smartly directed as in the first film. The nits are admittedly easier to pick here; having had the good fortune to see [REC] a couple of times by now, I can say it's a thin thriller in terms of story and character that's nonetheless impeccably constructed and designed to freak you out. Now it's like a haunted house with a few too many lights left on: matters don't necessarily drag with an added fifteen minutes padding out the proceedings, but watching a parade of familiar faces (including Jay Hernandez, Columbus Short, Rade Serbedzija, and Denis O'Hare) go peeking around corners and running down halls is ultimately harder to shake than a couple of words on the screen and a couple of unknowns on a screaming streak. Sometimes less is definitely more, and the original is absolutely the finer film for knowing that rule.
And yet, when taken out of the shadow of its predecessor and placed amidst the ranks of studio horror offerings of late (aside from the more ambitious and accomplished likes of Cloverfield), Quarantine gets a lot more points for delivering some genuine toe-tapping tension beyond a flurry of handheld camera work and some gratuitous gore shots -- all the translated pages in the world can't keep that dialogue-free climax from tightening the screws. Maybe we're simply swapping one handicap for another, but let's face it: (much) worse movies have claimed over 2,000 screens nationwide (not to mention dodged press screenings, cough). After a numbing amount of scare-free studio offerings, a jolt or two is all it takes to please a genre fan, and there are defintely some fun jolts to be found scattered throughout the flick -- even if they are second-hand. Quarantine may not be a [REC], but at least it's not a wreck either.

Behind The Scenes With Tim Burton |

Don't you remember the scene in Alice in Wonderland with the pirate ship? Or the scores of extras in Victorian clothing? No? Well Tim Burton is putting that scene in your head whether you like it or not, based on new photos from behind the scenes of his motion-capture take on Lewis Carroll's classic story. The 3D movie-focused blog Market Saw got the shots from an extra on the set, and we've included a few of them below. They're hosting over 40 high-res photos, so be sure to check them out.
Most of the shots focus on a ship that honestly looks identical to the one that Sweeney Todd rode into London on in Burton's movie last year. But given that the movie will be motion captured, there really is no telling how it will look in the end. While these photos give some idea of where Burton is going with his vision, we won't really know what the movie will look like until it's gone through many, many hours of computer computer work. Still, check out the photos below and at Market Saw, and start speculating. |

High School Musical stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens have hinted that they would not be willing to appear in a fourth film.
The pair, who play Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez in the movies, are currently promoting the forthcoming release of the newest film in the franchise, High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
Speaking to DS about the possibility of a fourth movie at High School Musical 3's London premiere, Efron admitted: "Well, our characters graduate, so I don't think that would work."
His comments were echoed by Hudgens, who fielded the same question with a reply of: "Well, we've graduated!"
Corbin Bleu, better known as Chad Danforth in the movies, refused to rule out continuing with the franchise, however. The actor confirmed that he would sign up for a new High School Musical project "if the means were correct".
High School Musical 3: Senior Year is released on October 22 in the UK.

BONO'S new Spider-Man musical is set to be the most expensive production in Broadway history.
The U2 frontman - along with bandmate The Edge - will write the score for the upcoming New York show based on the comic book superhero, and total costs are expected to reach $40 million.
The production - which will have a weekly running cost of up to $1million - will be helmed by The Lion King director Julie Taymor.
A source said: "She doesn't care what it costs. Does not care at all. Her attitude is, it's for the art, and you don't question artists."
Sources say the budget may have to drop to $35 million, but the show would still have to run successfully for 8000 years to break even. |

Aamir Khan is remaking the super hit kollywood movie Ghajini which originally starred Surya and Asin in the lead role. Directed by A.R Murugadoss, the movie will have music by A.R Rahman.
everyone was curious to see the bald look that Aamir will sport similar to the one that Surya had in the original. Recently he appeared at the premier of the movie Race and he will appear in his next film Ghajini in this look. Clean shaved, small hair-cut with a thick chip would definitely be a surprise for the Aamir Khan fans in the movie Ghajini. Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist went though one-and a half hour hair-cur session to bring him in this look. Hairstylist Avan Contractor completed the hair-cut for Aamir Khan in the presence of Aamir’s wife Kiran Rao, lyricist Prasun Joshi, designer Arjun Bhasin and director A R Murugados.
However the Hindi version of the movie is expected to have a different climax than the original
The film is a remake of the Hollywood psychological thriller Memento direct |
