CinemaBlend got to participate in an online press conference for the DVD release of "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," where director Jon Turteltaub talked briefly about the third film.
"I'm guessing that we're a few years away," he revealed. "By the time we come up with a decent idea and develop it into a complicated and intelligent puzzle it's going to be at least 2009. Then to prep it and cast it... it should be three years away."
Even though he is planning the film to hit theaters in 2011, that's not as far away as it might seem. The first installment was released in 2004 and the sequel followed in 2007, which is three years after the original.
Turteltaub added that the third film would not be driven by the need to make money. "This movie begets sequels because it's the kind of genre MEANT to beget sequels." I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the first "National Treasure" movie earned $347 million worldwide, while "National Treasure 2" earned $442 million.
