Interesting little movie from Leigh, with some over-the-top moments, but all in all it grows on you. Hawkins plays a lead character who is warm, charming, and utterly irritating, but is Eddie Marsan who completely runs the show.
A couple of sub-plots don't really go anywhere (namely one in particular involving a hobo), but all-in-all a good films that's even a little artistic.
This is worth recommending for the scenes with the driving instructor alone, just hilarious stuff. Sally Hawkins shows her potential as a great actress, more so in her solemn moments than in the goofy state that comprises her character's general personality. Apart from these short spans of promise, there's not a lot going on in this movie. The story had so many opportunities to create a bona fide conflict, to challenge the viewers' capacity to weigh blissful ignorance with cynicism, that I felt were wasted. In the end, I wasn't so "happy-go-lucky" about the film's direction.
comedic optimism that borders on sweet but is never saccharine, hawkins holds a great leading female role that is dynamic beyond comparison, the plot is a little too situational but it is treated with tenderness
Sally Hawkins is a revelation in this film. Whether you appreciate people with endless pep or optimism, you'll definitely appreciate the performance that this great actress gives as a --you guessed it--happy-go-lucky woman who's bothered by nothing and by no one.
What works for me about this movie is that no matter how "bad" things get for her, Hawkin's character never once hides behind her bright view of the world to delude herself into a false reality. It's not so much that she hasn't matured or is avoiding to deal with things, as much as it is about her showing who she really is and how messed up everyone around can be--and expects her to be as well.
This is definitely a Best-Acrtress award contender. I find that even though it's a comedy, Hawkins gives a very impressive performance that can stand against the likes of Angelina Jolie or Anne Hathaway this year.
P.S. The driving instructor, Scott, will make you both laugh and be very afraid all at once.
