Plot: Story of low-budget Hollywood director Edward D. Wood, Jr., whose notoriously bad cult films include Glen or Glenda? (USA/1953) and Plan 9 from Outer Space (USA/1956).
This film somehow made me think of Sunset Boulevard. It was alright, but I'm not a big Tim Burton fan, so this is not really my cup of tea. Along with Edward Scissorhands, one of his best pictures though...
A great movie about the worst movie director the world had ever seen. Martin Landau performs at his best, he made Bela Lugosi hilarious and dramatic simultaneously. With Johnny Depp in the lead role, you can readily sense how irritating Edward Wood is. The black and white effect works out well too - makes us feel like we are transported back in time for two hours. One of Tim Burton's best films.
Ed Wood is Tim Burton's best movie ever. And maybe Johnny depp's best character...
This is just Amazing !
So ironic! An excellent movie about the "worst director ever", and definitely, the best film by the awesome Tim Burton. ED WOOD transports you back to the 50's, making use of its stylish look and comic feel. A great script and excellent directorial work by Burton make this film a must-see. As usual, the director managed to assemble an impressive cast: Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette and Bill Murray. The classic feel of this movie is so powerful. LOVED IT!
Boom! And there he is,the worst director of all times(?),in the flesh by a master Grimm descendant.Of course he's the worst of his era,we do have a lot more ridiculous directors nowadays, yet it's amazing to see Depp portraying a caricature persona in the making!Hey,there's Orson Welles to top it off,in the acting flesh of D'Onofrio that is.
The best of the Burton-Depp collaborations. This film vividly tells the story of "The worst director of all time", Edward D. Wood Jr. and his relationship with legendary B-movie actor, Bela Lugosi. Martin Landau is brilliant, and D' Onofrio really looks like Orson Welles!!
There is no doubt that this is one of the most underrated films of all time. It made almost no money at the box-office, which is a shame considering that it is a true work of art about the life of Ed Wood (voted the worst director of all time, but trust me, they get much worse). "Ed Wood" sets Tim Burton as one of the greatest directors of our time, considering his low budget and lack of a story. And how he brought back Bela Lugosi from the dead, well, that is amazing.
Ed Wood is about the worst director ever (not Uwe Boll) and his odyssey to give us another Citizen Kane. What Ed Wood gave us was Plan 9 From Outer Space, which some call the worst film ever made (I have to argue that I've seen much worse in the last 6 months with bigger budgets and bigger stars).
What's great about Ed Wood is that it feels like a cheesy B movie with over the top dialogue from most of the stars. It's almost as if their lives are a B movie. Depp is awesome as Wood, a man who is so removed from reality that he doesn't realize how much his films suck.
The breakout is Martin Landau as Bella Lugosi. Landau accomplishes a feat that's difficult for an actor: he brings Lugosi back from the dead. He seels us Bella and we don't know any high pressure tactics to buy it. A deserved Oscar win for Landau.
Ed Wood is a great film that's an underdog story. Ed is a main that wants fame from his film and even though the fame he got isn't quite the same as what Roson Welles achieved with Kane there is a symetry between Woods career and Welles. Both peaked with the film they're remembered for and both faded into the obscurity of each level of their stardom. Welles did fish stick commercials and Wood did softcore porn. What's the difference?
fantastic homage to the director Edward D. Wood. Martin Landau gives a great performance as the eccentric and tragic figure Bela Lugosi.
I really loved this movie! Johnny Depp does such a great job playing Ed Wood and really portraying the character. Very funny and serious movie all around.
WOW! I can't believe I waited this long to watch this film! Martin Landau OWNS the screen as Bela Lugosi. Great film!
Funny, amusing film. Overall the film was what could be expected from a Burton/Depp film and I thought that Johnny Depp was fantastic as always.
SOO FUNNYYY!!! I couldn't believe how different Johnny's character was in this! It was his funniest part BY FAR!! I never get tired of seeing Johnny is women's clothing!! XD
Great movie, Martin Landau's awards and accolades are well deserved. I laughed SO HARD at the octopus scene.
Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast were also terrific. They went through so much. This movie is a nice tribute. Tim Burton's most sophisticated film.
I'ts quirky. Its a typical Johnny Depp/Tim Burton movie according to me. I liked it! It was abit boring at times but overall a good movie.
The story opens on these mysterious explosions. nobody knows what's causing them but they're upsetting all the buffalo.
Ed Wood, played by Johnny Depp, has a dream of becoming a big time director, producer, and writer. The movies starts with a scene from one of his plays and then the cast gathered around to read the horrible review. Although Ed is not exactly where he would like to be career wise, he has a wonderful relationship with his girlfriend Dolores, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. But he has a secret from her. He likes to dress in women's clothes.
Ed gets his chance to write and direct a movie. He choses the title "Glen or Glenda" for the movie is about a man who has a secret of dressing in women's clothing. Ed tells Dolores his secret by having her read the script. After the shock passes over her, she decides to help Ed and be in his movie.
Also in "Glen or Glenda" is one of Ed's favorite actors Bela Lugosi, played by Martin Landau. Ed meets Bela at a coffin store and gives Bela a ride home after. They end up becoming very close friends.
"Glen or Glenda" is a huge flop. But this doesn't discourage Ed. He presses on and gets to make another movie. This next movie also casts his friends and Dolores. Dolores is to play the female lead named Janet. The movie is short on cash and fund raisers are no help. That's when Ed meets a girl who is willing to help with the budget. And that's when Dolores loses the lead about gains the role of file clerk.
After the movie is complete, Dolores leaves Ed. And to make things worse, Bela is taken to a hospital for his drug addiction. While in the hospital waiting room, Ed meets his love Kathy, played by Patricia Arquette.
Shortly after that, Bela passes away. Ed had just started filming his next movie, again with Bela, and has the last footage Bela ever shot. Ed decides to make a movie surrounding that footage. The movie is made and Ed and Kathy get married. And in the end, Edward D. Wood, Jr. is named the worst director of all time.
This movie had everything. Great writing, directing, and acting. It's amazing to see Johnny Depp as this extremely optimistic horrible director. He gets the facial expressions and movements down to a pin on Ed Wood. Just watching him work is very entertaining.
As for Landau, he very much deserved his Best Supporting Actor award. And Bill Murray is absolutely hysterical ("What about glitter? When I was a headliner in Paris, audiences always liked it when I sparkled").
All in all, a fantastic film. One of the best from the 90's.
Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.
A really funny movie....Edward D Wood is a stupid fella, yet his love and innocent passion towards filmmaking are somehow heartbreaking!

I loved this movie and I loved Johnny Depp in it as Edward D Wood JR. I love Johnny Depp sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much and he totally owned the role of Ed Wood and Martin Landau was also good as Bela Lugosi.
"Pull the strings! Pull the strings!" Martin Landau owned this movie. Johnny Depp's great in it, but is overshadowed by Martin Landau. It's a very underrated movie. Tim Burton's a genius with it.
Loved this film. It was funny but very very sad at the same time. Tim Burton is a total god haha.
Should he tell her? Should he not tell her? He's torn Georgie, this is drama!
