Be Kind Rewind is a very good comedy that with a unique travel through movies and jazz music. It has a very original and interesting story and a very well developed plot about A man (Black) whose brain becomes magnetized unintentionally destroys every tape in his friend's video store. In order to satisfy the store's most loyal renter, an aging woman with signs of dementia, the two men set out to remake the lost films, which include Back to the Future, The Lion King, and Robocop. The references they make about many films are very amusing and it also has very good music. The cast is very good, Jack Black is very good and funny, Mos Def was very convincing and Danny Glover with an excellent performance as always.
11-09-08 -- Jack Black & Mos Def were pretty darn good together. Mos Def has already proven to me that he is a very good actor but I am always skeptical. Great idea for a movie. A movie about making your own movies. Brilliant! Reminds me of the time I filmed the first 10 minutes of Happy Gilmore with Lego's. I can see why the movies were only 20 minutes long!
Credit goes to Mos Def in this movie - Jack Black's character was just too irritating! The film wasn't what I expected either - a few laughs but not an out & out comedy as it appeared to be on the trailer.
The unexpected turn in the story at the ending was sweet though.
I haven't laughed soo hard in soo long. Jack Black and Mos Def make the most out of a pretty good script. Reminds me of the feel-good movies from the 80's...the ghostbusters and boyz-n-the-hood remakes were hilarious!!
Even though it was poorly made, the point of it made it all seem unimportant. This is a movie about love for movies, and it was sweet after all. I enjoyed it.
A very delightful movie not Gondry's best, but it may be one of Black's greatest films. It has a nice slow pace that lets the story unfold perfectly. The script and direction is great and overall it's a wonderful story about the beauty behind true film making and the importance of a solid community. It's funny, cute, serious and heart warming all at the same time. Black, Mos Def, and Glover make an interesting trio and is a movie anyone who appreciates off beat comedies will like.
Not a good movie. Few chuckles, nothing hysterical. Big plot holes. i know its unbelieveable but its unbelieveable how unbelieveable it is. Bad ending.
An ok comedy, with an interesting twist, which leads to some funny creative moments.Unfortunately i am not the biggest fan of Jack Black as i find him a bit too "samey" in his movies.Mos Def was worth watching though.
Another timeless classic from the guy who brought you "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Science of Sleep". When Jerry's (Black) brain becomes magnetized, he accidentally erases all of the tapes in a videoshop run by his friend Mike (Def). They then decide to remake all of them and put themselves in the film also called "Sweding".
The movie balances between raucous comedy and some genuinely heartwarming scenes as a community comes together in an attempt to save an old video store from demolition. The characters are all very like-able and ultimately it can be viewed as a tale that does not need to be taken too seriously to be enjoyed. "Sweding" is described as taking something you love and putting something of yourself in it. This movie is utterly lovable because it was obvious everyone in it loved what they were doing. Be Kind, Rewind is a great little film!
Michel Gondry's odd, silly and ultimately sweet ode to movie lovers everywhere is as whimsical as it is inconsequential. Jack Black stars as a Passaic, New Jersey garage worker who becomes magnetized after attempting to sabatoge a power plant, only to then accidentally erase every VHS tape in the local video store - a small, neighborhood operation that rents ONLY VHS for $1 and 1 day. With the financially troubled and Fats Waller-obsessed proprietor (Danny Glover) out of town on a "memorial" trip, this leads Black and his best friend (Mos Def), inevitably, to the most logical conclusion - refilm every tape in the store on VHS with themselves as the actors! This (much to their surprise) becomes a legend and brings in all sorts of new customers. I know, it doesn't make much sense in a logical sort of way, but if you just roll with it, it's funny enough, and sweet enough and has a very nice concluding message. Gondry is known for being something of a visually imaginative sort - he started with music videos (Bjork, etc.) and then moved forward to such features as "Human Nature" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (as well as the fun concert film "Dave Chappelle's Block Party"). His previous effort was the uneven and bizarre "The Science of Sleep," and he is obviously in love with movies, as well as the low (or no) budget effects that are sometimes necessary to make them happen - cardboard as set design, fans in front of the camera to simulate the effect of "an old timey movie," etc. It's this love of movies that permeates most of the characters in this film, and it's Gondry's love of movies that is infectious enough to make you laugh, and tug at your heartstrings.
the originality of this movie is a 5 star.emotion parts are strong, the comedy parts are a bit lacking.shame on you hollywood for ruining a definite remembered movie if it had better comedy writing.jack black is solid as always.
This was pretty good. It was entertaining ad funny but not as much as I thought it would be. It had an awesome ending though! How cute. Great acting and great story. I want to go and do that now!
absolute shit, got a little bit better towards the end but still a pretty boring filmm and i dont see how you can make a film about remaking films such the lion king and back to the future. big disappointment!!
Really, really beautiful, I loved this. The characters are perfect, Mos Def and Jack Black play off each other so well, Gondry's direction is wonderful as always. Just brilliant.
The sweding was hillarious, and the main plot touching. An especially beautiful ending. This is a movie made by and for poeple who love movies, and it shows.
Definitely an interesting concept, but execution is often bogged down in absurdity and boring false-history. Jack Black and Mos Def never hit their strides as believable or compelling characters.
A great film, I admire Gondry's style and imagination. This was a little too much like "Batteries not included" at times, but is generally very entertaining
If you take it for what it's worth as a cute, quirky independent film then it meets expectations. But if you are expecting a blow you away comedy because it stars Jack Black then you will be disappointed. Maybe the movie would have gotten better ratings if it didn't have such an "all-star" cast. The Sweded movies are great. The movie's website made it that much more interesting with the sweded internet.
Charming and somewhat hilarious, Be Kind Rewind is a an optimistic, and enjoyable movie dedicated to artful movies. The end will leave you happy, and, though not a laugh out loud riot, will make you laugh.
